As the owner of the Strafer that has passed through several noble hands on MAASF I feel the need to stand up for my hate machine.
1) To use it effectively you have to carry a heavy ass giant CO2 tank with a remote that somewhat restricts your movement. HAVE FUN WITH BRUSH, TREES, AND DOORWAYS.
2) Any decent SAW setup will match or exceed your range. The difference between 35 and 175 bbs per second is, in actual physical effects, minimal. Suppressed is suppressed.
3) You know exactly where and when every firing of the damn thing occurs. Noise is distinctive as fuck.
And yes, I've played against one twice, both before owning one. The second time (Almenon) I, seeing it in the enemy formation and knowing exactly what it was, explained the problem to my team and made its bearer a priority target. Rather than fleeing the best team elements IMMEDIATELY sought out the Strafer every time it was fired (or intercepted the squad it was in on the way to the fight), making it difficult for the thing to maintain a consistent presence in the battle. I have only, and probably will only, use it as a novelty, but the idea that its cheating or makes you instantly win is just wrong. A solid SAW would be just as, if not more, effective and efficient. As for the realism argument, eh. It's about a portable as a real flamethrower (and has similar effective range), but OH RIGHT WE USE GUNS THAT SHOOT 200 FEET BUT HOLD A MINIMUM OF 100 AND MAXIMUM OF 5000 ROUNDS. For a re-enactment or really intense simulation, no. But for anything else...whatever.
It is however, scary as all fuck (especially with a tracer). And therein lies what you pay to possess.
Cool video as well.

+1 for what Toast said. After encountering the Strafer at Survival Recon; Jar, Holmes and myself systematically crawled through the woods and ruined its shit. It's like anything else, a challenge that the operator has to adapt to. A horrifying, nightmare fuel challenge? Sure. But a beatable one. I've been on the squad set to protect the beast, and I've been on the receiving end as well (at the same time actually... go figure.) It is what it is.
Now does this mean you should see it at Northern Frozen Pine Orchard Digger XXIV? Hell no. It's all about setting.
