Hey all, I was just reading a Yahoo! article about the whole 3-d printing of firearms thing. I just wanted to get your two cents on the lawmakers who are all freaking out, and so on, and what impact you think it might have. Personally, I think it's silly. Criminals are going to find ways to get illegal, un-serial numbered (such as coup weapons, the liberator, etc. ), and makeshift guns no matter what. Guess what?! There have been instructions online for at least 30 years, even back on USENET/TelNet, detailing how to make a shotgun from a piece of pipe, and end cap, some rubber bands, and a nail. Woo! You don't see them everywhere, do you? No. I think it's mostly just fear mongering. As an aside, 3d printers, and the materials to use with them, are pretty damn expensive. You'd be better off with a lathe, or a milling machine.
